CI-H/HW Subject Selector FAQs

Q. What is the CI-H/HW Subject Selector?

A. The CI-H/HW Subject Selector is used to request enrollment in CI-H/HW subjects which have limited enrollments. The Subject Selector will allow you to choose up to two primary CI-H/HW subjects, along with up to two alternative CI-H/HW subjects for each in case you are not admitted to the primary. You will learn the outcome of your requests when you get your schedule. Before term schedules are published, you can also use the Subject Selector to place yourself on waitlists that instructors use after Registration Day to offer enrollment.

If you are a new student or student returning from leave, you cannot pre-register or use the selector, but you will receive priority for your waitlist choices.

Q. How do I get to the subject selector?

A. If you are a continuing student, the subject selector is part of the pre-registration workflow. When you go to the pre-registration application, you will be prompted to enter the subjects for which you want to pre-register, and click Submit Subjects. On the next screen, if any of the subjects are CI-H or CI-HW subjects, you will be prompted to click the CI-H/HW Subject Selector button. You must go to the subject selector to record your choices, select alternatives, and indicate whether you want to be on the waitlist if you are not admitted. When you are done with the subject selector, clicking Save & Continue will bring you back to the pre-registration application, where you can review your selections and click Submit Pre-Registration to finalize them. You can add CI-H and HW subjects until the CI-H/HW deadline; between the deadline and the close of pre-registration, you can only delete subjects you picked, or request to be added to the waitlist for a new CI-H/HW subject.

If you are an incoming freshman or new student in the Fall term, you will access the subject selector from your online registration form. When you add a CI-H or CI-HW subject for which you want to register, you will be prompted to click the Subject Selector link. You must go to the subject selector to record your choices, select alternatives, and indicate whether you want to be on the waitlist if you are not admitted. When you are done with the subject selector, clicking Save & Continue will bring you back to the online registration form.

If you are a new student in Spring term, you cannot use the subject selector. If you wish to take a CI-H or CI-HW subject, you must first add yourself to the waitlist and then wait for an offer from the instructor.

Q. When do I need to select CI-H/HW subjects?

A. If you are a continuing student, you must select a CI-H/HW subject during pre-registration by the CI-H/HW deadline.

If you are an incoming freshman or new student in the Fall term, you must select a CI-H/HW subject when you register, before schedules are run (deadline of September 3 for Fall term).

Q. What happens if I don’t select my CI-H/HW subjects by my deadline? Can I still get in?

A. If you miss your CI-H/HW deadline, you can add yourself to waitlists. If you are a continuing student, keep in mind that if you add yourself to waitlists after the deadline, you will be prioritized lower on the waitlist than other continuing students who selected the subject by the deadline but were not scheduled into it.

Q. I'm a continuing student. Why do I need to select my CI-H/HWs so early?

A. Enrollment in these subjects is limited, and departments need planning time to determine whether to add instructors or sections to accommodate demand. It is also hoped that the early deadline will encourage you and your advisor to talk about your subject selections while you are both on campus.

(top of page)

Q. Why are these subjects capped?

A. CI-H/HW subjects have limited enrollments in order to guarantee sufficient attention to student writing and ample opportunity for oral expression.

(top of page)

Q. How many CI-H/HWs can I select?

A. You can select up to two. For each choice, you can enter up to two alternatives in case you are not scheduled into your first choice.

(top of page)

Q. What if I want to take more than two CI-H/HWs?

A. If you are interested in taking more than two CI-H/HW subjects, in the selector you may list up to two additional subjects in the SUBJECTS TO BE WAITLISTED area below your primaries. If it is before your deadline, you must first make two primary choices (with or without alternatives). If you are a continuing student and it is after the CI-H/HW deadline you may add up to two subjects to be waitlisted although you cannot add primary choices. Continuing students who add themselves to waitlists before the CI-H/HW deadline will be prioritized higher on the waitlists than students who add themselves to the waitlists after the deadline. Once the selector is no longer available and waitlists are published, you may add yourself to as many waitlists as you wish.

Q. I need to take a CI-H/HW. Will I have a better chance of getting my choice than a student who has already fulfilled the requirement?

A. It depends on what you need, whether you are an upperclassman or a freshman, and what type of subject you are selecting.

For CI-HW subjects, CI-HW-Required upperclassmen who have not completed a CI-HW subject will be in the highest priority group, followed by CI-HW-Required freshmen who have not completed their required CI-HW subject. Next will be freshmen who have not completed a CI-H subject. At the bottom are all other students.

For CI-H subjects, there is only one priority group. Students will be given equal priority regardless of their year and whether they have fulfilled the requirement. These priority groups have been determined by the Faculty Subcommittee on the Communication Requirement.

Relative to waitlists, continuing students who requested waitlist placement when selecting CI-H/HW subjects prior to the deadline will be prioritized higher on the waitlist than students who add themselves to waitlists after the deadline.

Q. I like two CI-H/HW subjects. How should I set up my selections so I have the best chance of getting into both?

A. Select each one as a primary selection. In most cases, the two will be treated equally by the scheduling algorithm. (The only exception is if you need to take a CI-HW and pick two CI-HWs as primary selections; in that case, you will be asked to prioritize the one you want to use to fulfill the requirement.)

Q. I tried to get into a CI-H/HW subject last term, but was not scheduled into it. I would like to take it this term. Will there be a way for me to get priority?

A. The new CI-H/HW selection process will also prioritize students who weren't scheduled into their chosen CI-H/HW subject. A student who:

  • chose the subject as a primary selection the previous time it was offered (beginning Fall 2014),
  • didn’t get scheduled into it, and
  • didn't register for it

will be given higher priority within each group than students picking it for the first time.

Q. Why do some selections have a section drop-down list and others do not?

A. A handful of subjects have sections in which different material is taught in each section. These subjects require registration at the section level. In these cases, students can designate the specific sections for which they are interested. The sections essentially mimic subjects, in that individual sections can be designated as primaries, alternatives and waitlist requests. Students who are not interested in specific sections can select the ‘Any Section’ option.

Q. What happens if I list alternatives, and also request to be waitlisted for one of my primaries?

A. The alternatives will be used during the scheduling process. The system will try to place you in your alternatives only if there is no room in your primary. If you check the box under your primary, you will be put on the waitlist for it whether or not you get into an alternative.

(top of page)

Q. Can I list the same subject as an alternative on both of my primaries?

A. Yes, you can list the same selection as a 1st or 2nd alternative for both primaries.

(top of page)

Q. Can I be waitlisted for my alternatives?

A. Not in the Subject Selector, but you will be able to add yourself to additional waitlists after schedules are published.

(top of page)

Q. What is the difference between the waitlist checkbox right under my primary, and the SUBJECTS TO BE WAITLISTED section below?

A. To be put on the waitlist for one of your primaries, you should list it in the main REQUESTED SUBJECTS area, and check the waitlist box underneath it. The SUBJECTS TO BE WAITLISTED section should only be used if you would like to be waitlisted for up to two CI-H/HW subjects other than your primaries or alternatives.

(top of page)

Q. When will I know if I got into the subjects I requested?

A. You will know when schedules are published whether you are enrolled in the subjects you requested. Beginning the first day of classes, instructors will have the ability to offer enrollment to students on waitlists.

(top of page)

Q. I was scheduled into a CI-H/HW subject but I am thinking of taking another subject that meets at the same time. Will I lose my spot if I don't show up on the first day of class?

A. Instructors can have different policies regarding attendance on the first day. Please check with the instructor in advance of the first class meeting.

Q. I listed three subjects in the Pre-Registration screen, but when I went to the Subject Selector it had removed one of them. Why?

A. You are only allowed to request two CI-H/HW subjects. If you listed more than two CI-H/HW subjects in the Pre-Reg screen, only two that you listed (the first two in alphabetical order) will be carried over into the Subject Selector. You may substitute the third subject as one of your two primaries, add it as an alternative to your primaries, or ask to be put on the waitlist for it.

Q. What is the difference between Save and Save & Continue on the Subject Selector page?

A. Clicking Save will save your current choice(s); you will remain on that page. Clicking Save & Continue will save your choice(s) and return you to a Pre-Registration Summary page, to review your selections. If you want to continue to add/edit your pre-reg subjects, click the Return to Pre-Registration button.

(top of page)

Q. After clicking Save & Continue in the Subject Selector, do I have to submit again from the Pre-Registration Summary page?

A. No; returning to the Pre-Registration Summary page finishes the process, and you will see your requested selections and alternatives there. If you need to make additional changes, you can click on the Return to Pre-Registration button at the bottom of the page. Note that the first time you submit your entries you will receive an email confirmation that you have submitted pre-registration, although the email will not contain details about the subjects.

(top of page)

Q. Why are subjects listed as “Requested” instead of “Pre-Registered” on the Pre-Registration Summary page?

A. CI-H/HW subjects that you selected as your primaries will be shown as “Requested” because you are not pre-registered into the subject yet. When student schedules are published, your enrollment in CI-H/HW subjects will be confirmed.

(top of page)

Q. Why can’t I add a new subject in the Subject Selector?

A. If the deadline for CI-H/HW selection has passed, you cannot add any new subjects. You may only remove subjects from the Subject Selector and request to be added to a waitlist.
